Beginning in central Asahikawa, this small-group experience follows scenic cycling routes through the Ishikari River corridor toward Kamui Kotan — one of the region’s most dramatic and culturally significant destinations. Along the way, guests will pass through a historic steam train tunnel, learn about the area’s frontier and railway history, experience local agriculture, and take in some of the most memorable scenery in the region.

Guests will discover a region shaped by nature, Ainu cultural significance, railway history and agriculture, all within a relaxed and enjoyable ride supported by electric bikes and a local guide. Kamui Kotan is presented in your visitor material as both geologically dramatic and culturally important, including its Ainu meaning as “the place where gods dwell,” and its preserved railway history.

This opening section introduces guests to the natural setting around Asahikawa, with scenic river views and opportunities to begin understanding the region’s past, including its transport and railway history. Ishikari River Route → Kamui Kotan
The route continues through the Ishikari River valley toward Kamui Kotan, a place of exceptional natural beauty.
Here, the river narrows into a dramatic gorge and the landscape takes on a very different character — steeper, more rugged and deeply atmospheric. Kamui Kotan is also one of the most culturally significant sites in the region, with strong ties to Ainu history and belief. Your visitor document highlights both its sacred meaning and its importance as a historic passage through the valley.
Historic Steam Train Tunnel Ride
One of the most memorable parts of the tour is riding through a historic railway tunnel once used by steam trains.
This section offers a rare chance to physically experience an old transport route that played an important role in regional development. The nearby former Kamui Kotan Station and preserved railway remnants also reinforce the site’s significance in local rail history.
Rice Farm Stop
The tour then pauses at a local rice farm, where guests gain insight into the importance of agriculture in Hokkaido and the history of farming in the region.
This stop helps broaden the experience beyond scenery, showing how the land has supported local communities and why Hokkaido is so strongly associated with food production.
